ESA ecology certification

The Ecological Society of America’s Board of Professional Certification would like to remind those members who wish to submit their applications to become certified ecologists in 2012 that the February 1 primary deadline is fast approaching.  Since 1981, the professional certification program has provided recognition for ecologists who seek to incorporate ecological principles in decision-making, who meet a minimum set of standards in education and experience, and who adhere to high ethical standards as outlined in the ESA Code of Ethics.

Postdoc: climate change and Rocky Mountain fishes

Consequences of Climate Change for Alpine Lake-Stream Networks and Native Fishes in the Southern Rocky Mountains
Climate change has the potential to influence western native trout through multiple pathways including increased temperatures, wildfire, and more variable precipitation and runoff patterns. These threats, along with the recreational and conservation importance of native trout, amplify the need to understand the potential consequences of climate change for these fishes. Currently, predictive models account for abiotic habitat characteristics for rivers (for example, stream temperature) that are driven by climate, but these models have little applicability to lake systems.

Postdoc: permafrost in a warming world

Postdoctoral research position in the Department of Biology at the University of Florida

We are seeking to fill a Postdoctoral research position in the Department of Biology at the University of Florida. The fellow will assist in a Department of Energy funded project focused on the fate of permafrost carbon in a warming world. The research is field and lab based, with the primary field location near Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The research foci are (1) net ecosystem carbon exchange and loss of old C from a gradient of sites undergoing permafrost thaw, and similar measurements in (2) a new experimental manipulation of permafrost thaw and water table. Radiocarbon measurements of C pools and fluxes are an important component of this project for determining the age of C losses from ecosystems.

PhD position: wetland hydroperiod

I am recruiting a MS or PhD student to investigate how long-term changes in climate will impact water (distribution, abundance, quality) and ecosystem services (e.g., biodiversity and livestock production) in Wyoming range systems. The effects of climate change are critically important in semi- arid systems where water is the ultimate limiting factor. Water availability is predicted to decrease in Wyoming rangelands regardless of precipitation due to temperature-related increases in vegetative evapotranspiration rates. In addition, annual water supply in high elevation systems is dependent on spring snowmelt from the mountains which may be significantly impacted by shifts in precipitation timing. Water shortage has negative consequences for both biodiversity and human resource use.

Hydrologist/programmer position

The Western States Water Council (WSWC) is looking to fill an open Hydrologist/Programmer position. The WSWC is looking for an energetic recent or near graduate in hydrology with an interest in, as well as experience with computer programming. The project will focus on helping the western states develop a water use and water availability data exchange. The purpose of this is to help the western states be in a better position to support the Department of Energy's water for energy studies and USGS's Water Census as well as other water availability and water planning studies. These types of data have historically been one of the weak links in the suite of water data, and the western states are committed to try to address these issues. Read More...

UN PROVIA adaptation conference

Adaptation Futures Conference

Climate change is one of the most important environmental, social and economic issues facing the world today. Despite growing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, some impacts such as higher temperatures, more intense floods, droughts, wildfires, and rising sea levels are now inevitable. We must plan for and adapt to these changes, to minimize the negative impacts and enhance the benefits to natural systems, societies, and human activities and well-being. This challenges decision making at all levels, from individuals to governments, as well as in business and industry.

Ecosystem-based adaptation approaches workshop and panel

Ecosystem-based Approaches to Adaptation:
Current and Innovative Methodologies for Implementation Action

Ecosystem-based approaches to Adaptation (EbA) have emerged as one suite of solutions to help many of the world’s most vulnerable regions buffer the worst impacts of climate change, maintain the resilience of natural ecosystems, their ecosystem services and the species that support them, and help people adapt to changing conditions.
While various approaches for determining the necessity and feasibility of adaptation measures have been considered as part of EbA planning, new and innovative methodologies are being generated to address growing socio-economic and environmental complexities, at which Conservation International (CI) is at the forefront.
Please join CI and learn from a panel of experts about what is working and what is still needed to make EbA a lasting solution to climate change vulnerability.
