Webinar on adaptation and governance

Changing Climate, Shifting Institutions: Building Governance and Capacity through Freshwater Adaptation
Efforts to respond to the impacts of a shifting climate in the water community have widely focused on particular eco-hydrological changes in freshwater systems, such as floods, droughts, and higher water temperatures. From this perspective, climate change is defined largely as a problem with an engineering (or engineering finance) solution. Engineers themselves, however, have declared that the current measures for designing long-lasting water infrastructure assumes that the recent historical hydrological information is a fair representation of future conditions — an assumption that has recently been declared “dead,” since historical statistically “normal” hydrological states are expected to shift, but without knowing how much or often even in what direction. Climate change thus causes increasingly uncertain hydrological futures for decades and possibly centuries.

Strategic Water Policy Forum: Slovenia

The Bled Strategic Forum: Global and National Water Policy for the Next Decade
30 August 2010, Bled, Slovenia

As a result of climate change, population growth, environmental degradation and increased demand for food and energy, almost half of the world's population will have lived in areas of high water stress by 2030. With longer droughts, more frequent extreme meteorological events and changes in precipitation patterns, global warming affects particularly the water cycle. Climate change will impact on the most vulnerable communities in developing countries, multiplying the effects of poverty, poor governance and political instability. Read More...

Sagebrush region PhD positions

Interdisciplinary PhD Research Fellowships in Social and Ecological Resilience of the Southern Idaho Sagebrush Steppe Ecosystem
Up to five Ph.D. research fellowships are available to join a collaborative, interdisciplinary team focusing on the social an ecological resilience of the sagebrush steppe ecosystem of the Columbia Plateau and northern Great Basin in southern Idaho. This region is a mosaic of public lands, private ranches, agricultural parcels, and areas experiencing rapid urban and recreational development. The social and ecological components, structures and processes within this ecosystem are rapidly changing as a result of population growth, economic opportunities, policy changes, land conversion, climate change, invasive species and shifts in disturbance regimes. To capture the range of variation in the system and determine thresholds for resilience, the student and faculty team will evaluate the characteristics and impacts of these drivers in study areas across a climate gradient that include minimally altered to highly impacted rangelands. With funding from the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program (IGERT), the students will pursue interlinked dissertation projects important for the overall theme, and work together to identify and address interdisciplinary issues critical for development of effective planning and policy for future resilience of this threatened system.  The team will interact with members of five other IGERT-sponsored student/faculty teams pursuing similar objectives in other ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest and Costa Rica. This opportunity is especially appropriate for students seeking to develop skills for interdisciplinary collaboration and team-based research that addresses complex problems involving interacting human and natural systems.

DFID report on climate change and development

http://www.forumforthefuture.org/projects/the-future-climate-for-development
Low-income countries are being affected first and worst by climate change. And climate change is a long-term challenge, where a long-term approach is essential to manage the risks and seize the opportunities it poses.
We want to put climate change at the forefront of thinking on development and that's why Forum for the Future, funded by the UK Department for International Development, undertook a year-long project looking at the possible responses to climate change in low-income countries out to 2030. We explored not only the direct environmental impacts of climate change, but also the social, political, psychological and economic shifts that it may cause.

US EPA listening event: water quality standards

EPA To Hold Listening Sessions on Potential Revisions to Water Quality Standards Regulation
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold two public listening sessions on potential changes to the water quality standards regulation before proposing a national rule. The current regulation, which has been in place since 1983, governs how states and authorized tribes adopt standards needed under the Clean Water Act to protect the quality of their rivers, streams, lakes, and estuaries. Potential revisions include strengthening protection for water bodies with water quality that already exceeds or meet the interim goals of the Clean Water Act; ensuring that standards reflect a continued commitment to these goals wherever attainable; improving transparency of regulatory decisions; and strengthening federal oversight.
