Asia’s sanitation market is huge. How big? Consider: 72% of the 2.6 billion people globally who do not use improved sanitation facilities live in Asia; 73% of the 1.1 billion people still practicing open defecation are in Asia; and up to 85% of Asia’s wastewater is discharged untreated, polluting scarce water resources. Recognizing the market potential, ADB is organizing a Sanitation Dialogue with development partners on 23-25 May in Manila, Philippines with the theme “Making Sanitation a Sustainable Business.” This issue of Water for All news zeroes in on Asia’s sanitation and wastewater management market and the opportunities for investments and partnerships it offers to achieve sanitation for all.

Dr. Kamal Kar championed Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), an approach that has empowered communities in more than 43 countries to become open defecation free. In this interview, Kamal talks about the spread of CLTS, the challenges to its implementation, and its achievements in defeating open defecation.

ADB walks Pasig River’s banks on World Water Day
On World Water Day, ADB organized a walking tour of a once-polluted Pasig River tributary. In line with the theme “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge,” the tour showcased results achieved by a community–private sector–government partnership.

Georgia: ADB $500 million to improve services in growing towns
A US$500 million ADB loan will improve water and sanitation services in Georgia’s expanding secondary towns. The investment program supports the country’s long-term sector development plan to provide reliable safe water and sanitation services to all urban residents by 2020.

Indonesia: Workshop helps to improve river basin leadership skills
Participants from 25 river basins reviewed leadership across and within organizations and leadership skills in a workshop on 5-6 April in Solo. The Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO) organized the workshop in line with its new action program.

Nepal: Study evaluates user groups’ potential for managing irrigation
Nepal’s irrigation systems suffer from underperformance, especially because of the poor linkages between irrigation and agriculture. A pilot project complementing ADB’s Community Managed Irrigated Agriculture Sector Project (CMIASP) evaluated the potential of multifunctional water users associations in managing irrigation systems.

Pakistan: ADB to extend US$650 million to rebuild flood damaged infrastructure
US$650 million in loans from ADB will help Pakistan rebuild vital infrastructure destroyed during last year’s floods. The loans will be used to reconstruct roads and bridges to safer, higher standards and upgrade flood protection embankments and other drainage infrastructure.

Viet Nam: ADB, France to help complete key southern water project
A US$60 million ADB supplementary loan and US$25 million in cofinancing from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) will complete the Phuoc Hoa Water Resources Project in Viet Nam. ADB and AFD had initially pledged a combined $124 million for the initiative.
