Regional US Midwest water management, climate change conference
The effect of climate change on community water resource management will be the focus of the Clean Water and Climate Adaptation Summit planned for September 16 and 17 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Presented by the Arboretum, in collaboration with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District and the Minnesota Climate Change Adaptation Working Group, the summit is aimed at local government officials and staff, industry leaders, natural resource professionals, scientists and citizens interested in learning how climate trends might affect Minnesota and the region.
Featured speakers include James M. Patchett of the Conservation Research Institute/Conservation Design Forum; Andrew Reese of AMEC engineering firm; Ben Santer, PhD, of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Mark Seeley, PhD, University of Minnesota Extension climatologist and meteorologist; Peter Mulvaney, assistant water management commissioner for the city of Chicago; and Ellen Shea, PhD, of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Services.
Participants may register to attend one or both days of the summit. Thursday's focus is "Green Infrastructure for Clean Water" with keynotes on "Stormwater Management: Back to the Future" (presented by Reese) and "Water-Centric Design: Restoring Nature's Balance" (presented by Patchett).
Friday's focus will be on the future: "Adapting for an Uncertain Climate: Preparing for the Next 100 Years" with keynote presentations by Santer, Shea and Mulvaney. Session speakers on Friday also include Lee Frelich, director of the UM Center for Hardwood Ecology, Don Pereira and Ann Pierce from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Kristin Raab from the state Department of Health.

The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the Oswald Visitor Center at the Arboretum, which is located at 3675 Arboretum Dr. (State Highway 5) in Chanhassen, just west of the intersection with Highway 41 and 9 miles west of the intersection with I-494.
