UWashington Water Center Update

Pacific Northwest Water Resource Community and UW Water Center Friends and Supporters

We write to tell you the sad news that the UW Water Center will be closing on June 30, 2010, after 22 years in its various forms.  This decision results from recent state budget cuts and changes in University of Washington program directions.  During the last 18 months we sought to make a strong case for continuing the Water Center and establishing a permanent directorship, but unsuccessfully.

While sunsetting the Center, we have tried to preserve as many of the Center’s resources as possible:
•    WATER JOBS ANNOUNCEMENTS:  As many of you know, the Water Center sends out water-related job announcements, at no cost.  We are happy to report that the state chapter of the American Water Resources Association (WA-AWRA) will be continuing this free service.  Please send job announcements (starting immediately) to:  waawrajobs@gmail.com    If you are currently signed up to receive the job announcements, no further action is needed by you.  You will continue to receive them.  If you haven't been receiving the job announcements, it's simple to sign up here:   https://mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/wa-awra_water_jobs

•
WEBSITE:  An archive of the Water Center’s website will remain on-line for one year, with its rich collection of scientific research and educational outreach materials on water-resource issues.  The archived site will be accessible at:  http://water.washington.edu.  However, as the site will no longer be maintained, over time, links may be broken.

•
WEEKLY WATER SEMINARS:  The Center’s longstanding and popular Tuesday morning Water Seminar Series will continue as a regular course offering through the UW School of Forest Resources.  It will remain free and open to the public as always.

•
WEEKLY EVENTS ANNOUNCEMENTS:  The popular email Weekly Roundup of Events, we regret, will be discontinued after June 30th.  You may want to consider the following UW environmental event listservs and calendars:
•    ANNUAL REVIEW OF RESEARCH:   There are no plans to continue the Annual Review at this time.  The archive of the previous Annual Reviews, including the most recent held on Feb. 17, 2010, is accessible at:  http://water.washington.edu/Outreach/Events/AnnualReview/annualreview.html

We thank you for your support and interest over the years.  We hope the legacy of the Water Center will live on through its many accomplishments and its many constituents who have supported and benefited from the Water Center’s mission of providing coordinated and comprehensive water research, in collaboration with the larger community, to solve the region’s pressing water problems.
