Guest blog: Extreme Amazon drought: fingerprints of climate change?

By Nick Sundt, WWF-US
The Amazon region is experiencing the third extreme drought in a dozen years -- and it may turn out to be the worst on record. The droughts coupled with recent research findings, suggest that rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases will rapidly increase the frequency and severity of droughts in the region. The implications for people, biodiversity and climate are ominous.

COP16 and Global Adaptation Policy: Feliz Navidad for Opportunties in 2010?

The global climate change policy landscape is littered with acronyms and insider language that’s not friendly to newcomers. Additionality, technology transfer, COPs, REDD versus REDD+ (and REDD++)… the terminology is messy and has a steep learning curve that often obscures the actual issues at stake. But these issues are quite important to understand for interested citizens. Here, I’d like to focus on an upcoming opportunity around the international climate change policy meetings scheduled for December in Mexico. Communicating adaptation: The triumph of personal hope?

Several times on this blog, I’ve provided anecdotes on the tensions around communicating climate change to diverse audiences, especially about how to prepare our families, communities, and societies for additional climate change impacts. Often, the conflicts around messaging are about how to communicate hope for immediate action to create a more positive future relative to trying to frighten people with negative futures into “acting right.”

Call for Colleagues: Mongolian ice-sheets

Dear Colleagues,

We are based in Mongolia and would like to share with you some novel research we are undertaking.

We are investigating ice shields that form in winter, and are called naleds (Russian) = aufeis (German) = taryn (Yakutian) = icing (English). We have detected thousands in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, around Beijing, Tibet and across parts of Central Asia. Many are far from permafrost and are even found in scorching hot deserts provided the winters are severe enough to freeze water easily.
