Growing an Adaptation Community
04/04/09 10:58
Those of us working in climate adaptation often work alone and in isolation within our organizations. It’s hard to find each other to learn and grow professionally. Moreover, we know we need support — emotional as well as professional, since climate adaptation is challenging and draining work whether you work in DRR, conservation, policy, or economic development. There have been a growing number of online communities that focus on climate adaptation. Here, we’re launching a new one called ClimateAdapt.Info.
This site was created to increase our ability to learn and collaborate about climate adaptation. We hope that adaptation professionals will use this community much like you would use the books and space available in a library. You can post articles of interest, chronicle a particular project, or pose a question to the group. Having a centralized location to post and work on documents is essential when working as far apart from one another as most of us do. You can use this as your workspace for collaborating on projects with others. If necessary, you can create “private” spaces for individuals or groups working together. Functions such as spreadsheets, calendars, and Google apps can be embedded as well. It’s also very easy to invite new members to the community. The platform readily works with non-English character sets.
Our community of contributors is comprised of individuals from NGOs/CSOs/non-profits, researchers, consultants, and government agencies. Additionally, while there are a handful of administrators from several different institutions, this site is unaffiliated with any specific organization. Our site is organized by both biome (freshwater, terrestrial, marine), region, and thematically (community adaptation, conservation, finance).
